Top 5 LinkedIn Profile Makeover Tips for Recruiters [SLIDES] n 23 October we partnered up with LinkedIn to man their Profile Makeover booth at the annual Talent Connect conference in London. The three of us (Laurence, Jorgen and Laurent over from Paris especially), had over a hundred  people coming for profile makeovers, including some of the keynote speakers. Almost all of our attendees were part of their companys HR community and as such they are ambassadors of their employer on social media and LinkedIn. We feel that its important to lead by example on LinkedIn, by having a strong profile that promotes both the individual and the company it can inspire other employees to do the same. Shop The Seasonal Clearance Sales Twice a year, in January and July, virtually all the major department stores have seasonal clearances.  While you may not be able to bag the latest  Walter Steigers, there are always plenty of stylish options to choose from.  The trick is to know when the sales start, because the best values go quickly and the most popular sizes are gone first.  If you want to try this avenue, call your favorite department store and ask them when their seasonal clearance starts, and put it on your calendar.  Bonus hint:  if you show up the day before the sale starts, many stores will already have their sale racks out and youll have first pick. Shop The Department Store Off-Price Outlets This may require more patience, because the off-price outlets for the major department stores usually only have the styles, colors, or sizes that wouldnt sell in the main retail store.  I wont name a name, but on the RACK (hint hint) youll find some pretty expensive items with sometimes huge markdowns. Youll also want to check these a little more carefully, because some stores will sell returns here that show no or almost no wear.  No biggie, if thats ok with you, but beware that if someone tried to squeeze a size nine into that seven and a half, it might not be a reliable fit. Shop Online If you just dont have the time or desire to do the sale or outlet routine, then the best bet to get good value is online.  But just because its online doesnt mean its a great deal.  There are still plenty of purely retail sellers online.  But if you look around, you find some good places to get great shoes at super prices. One of my favorites is Guilty Soles.  Perfect name, since Im guilty of being a shoe addict!  And a good selection of styles means youll have plenty of options to keep your closet shoe racks well-stocked. I cant move my family... Or can you? Relocation is a scary thought. Anita Bruzzese wrote a post about considering the options and tells the story of a family that tooka risk. Here are the take aways: Research the financial health of the company Research the labor market in the new locations just in case the new job doesnt work out Get as much relocation money from your new company as possible, if possible Another option would be to relocate only yourself for a trial period. Hey, who knows, you may enjoy the new city. A friend and neighbor of mine commuted for over a year to Pittsburgh. He spent 4 days down there and drove home for long weekends. Was it tough on their family, you betcha. But, he was earning money and doing something. My cousin solo-relocated for over a year. He would commute home on Fridays. There are also options for doing contract work. Could you go to New Jersey for 6 months? Honestly, I dont believe there is a shortage of jobs for those that are willing to do the work and be flexible. Perhaps it is about making short term sacrifices for longer term gains. Youll never know if you dont take a chance.
